Production Operator (All Shifts)

American Wood Fibers, Inc. (AWF) is hiring Production Operator (s) at our Pella, IA facility. The production operator may also be responsible for handling the operation of various equipment – fork trucks, yard trucks, and wheel loaders.

Responsibilities of a Production Operator :

  • Assists and operates various packaging equipment.
  • Prepares custom orders as per the bill of lading
  • Loads and unloads various trucks, as needed.
  • Performs daily cleanup activities and other duties as assigned.
  • Operates forks trucks and other power lift equipment as needed.
  • Maintains and verifies all required paperwork as a part of the job’s responsibility. This includes items such as – production, cleaning, and shipping paperwork.
  • Must follow all safety and plant rules. Must adhere to plant policies including: attendance, non-smoking, and breaks. Must use all required PPE.

Qualifications of a Production Operator :

  • High School diploma or GED

Transportation Logistics Analyst

American Wood Fibers (AWF), a rapidly growing manufacturer of consumer and industrial products sold to other manufacturers and to pet, agricultural and home heating markets, seeks a Transportation Logistics Analyst in Columbia, MD. AWF manufactures at 10 locations spanning the nation, has approximately 450 employees, and generates over $100M in annual sales.

Utilizing the Transportation Management System (TMS), the Transportation Logistics Analyst will create and coordinate a modern transportation management enterprise environment, which includes formulation of standard operating procedures for AWF’s transportation processes.  This position will handle repeatable analysis and tasks driving continuous cost and service improvements.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • In partnership with IT and Finance, act as the lead project manager and implementation specialist during the development of AWF’s TMS system; Upon implementation this position will be the Subject Matter Expert
  • Analyzes route schedules or load plans, historical activity and customer/carrier trends in order to provide recommendations for improvements to routing efficiency and solution effectiveness
  • Identify cost savings opportunities for the AWF locations via improvements to contract rates and carrier selections by examining current processes to implement and recommend improvements to drive out waste
  • Working closely with the Raw Materials and Sales team using reoccurring analysis to identify opportunities to drive continuous cost savings initiatives including new supplier freight optimization
  • Utilize the TMS system and root cause analysis to proactively monitor and manage key performance indicators such as trailer utilization and fleet efficiencies
  • Interact with customers/carriers in resolving problems and coordinating system implementations; provides training to ensure compliance
  • Creates and documents standard operating processes to include a formalized training plan for all internal AWF and external partner TMS users
  • Develop and distribute weekly customer metrics and customer performance reports to senior management
  • Applies network changes and synchronizes execution with TMS system
  • Use discretion and independent judgment to answer customer requests and propose solutions
  • Other projects and tasks as assigned

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to interact effectively in a team environment while simultaneously working independently on tasks/analysis with minimum supervision
  • Experience analyzing large sets of data
  • Candidate must possess computer skills to include: Excel, Microsoft Word, Outlook and PowerPoint

  • Responsible for consistently delivering and exceeding sales objectives set forth by the VP of Sales to meet the company growth objectives.

AWF manufactures at 10 locations spanning the nation, has 400+ employees, and generates over $100M in annual sales revenue.

Description:

The Strategic Sourcing Specialist –  Wood / Wood Fiber will be responsible for procuring raw material such as logs, sawdust, wood shavings, firewood and certain paper products as well as managing schedules and delivery, communicating lead times to the plants, selling off excess material when necessary and managing raw material database. Critical activities are identifying suppliers, negotiating and procuring material to obtain optimum quality, cost, terms, etc.

Key Responsibilities of Strategic Sourcing Specialist –  Wood / Wood Fiber include:

  • Strategically develop new supply sources as necessary insuring quality requirements and product specifications are met.
  • Coordinate company resources (Engineering, Production, Sales, QA/QC, and Maintenance) in the selection and qualification of new suppliers.
  • Reduce total acquisition costs through effective supplier contract negotiations and cost improvement initiatives.
  • Manage purchases to avoid excess and obsolete inventory.
  • Take lead position in working through return to supplier issues with QA (rejections, damage, etc.).
  • Maintain and update a list of critical inventories to be ordered on a regular basis to ensure availability.
  • Bulk sales responsibility including maintaining proper inventory levels, relationships, and negotiating positive gross   profit (GP).

Qualifications of the Strategic Sourcing Specialist –  Wood / Wood Fiber :

  • Log, Wood /Wood Fiber Raw Material purchasing experience preferred
  • Minimum of three (3) years raw material buyer experience in a manufacturing environment, preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Strong computer skills including the ability to prepare spreadsheets and use Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point and/or Access) to analyze data and trends
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills, with the ability to balance raw material inventory with production and maintenance needs
  • Highly motivated and results oriented
